Why Are You Afraid ?

dimanche 5 mai 2019, par Daniel MOUSSOUGAN

"And he said to them, Why are you afraid, men of little faith ?” Matthew 8:26

Fear is the first emotion expressed by human beings in front of danger before any decision to face the last one. Fear is determined by our inability to overcome an imminent or latent risk. Depending on its intensity and form, fear is described in different ways and can act to disrupt its victim.

Our basic text puts us in contact with Jesus and his disciples surprised by a great storm at sea. The master was sleeping. The winds became more violent and the storm more threatening. The inevitable had hypnotized the minds of the disciples ; probably a collective death, a common grave : the sea.

In the midst of a perilous storm and facing a terrific fear and the ineffectiveness of their agitations, the disciples had the last attitude : wake up Jesus and ask for help. "Lord, save, we are perishing !" They cried. Then, having risen, said the Bible, Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm to the amazement of the disciples (Matthew 8 : 26-27).

Before performing this miracle, Jesus reproached the disciples for being afraid, a fear that the Lord attributed to a lack of faith. He described the disciples as people of little faith (Matthew 8:26). This means, compared to other words of Jesus, that the faith of the disciples had not yet reached the size of a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20) which is the smallest seed on earth (Mark 4:31). Jesus took advantage of this storm to teach his disciples that the courage spawned by faith helps us master all situations in our lives.

To us, Jesus can also reproach today the same attitude as to the disciples, facing different trials and situations that arouse fear in us. It may be an inglorious past which memory of its cataclysms terrorizes us in the face of today challenges, a present that we lack the strategies and means to make profitable to us and an uncertain future that reverberates to us the echo of an impossible victory. It can also be an environment in which disorders and tumults seem to weaken our hope in a better future.

Let us have faith and trust in Jesus Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12 : 2). Only He is able to solve our difficulties and control all our future risks.
