“And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, loose him, and let him go.” John 11: 43-44
The Lazarus’ story is one of the most amazing passages. Here is Lazarus who was in the grave at one point, and at another point seated at the Master's table. Isn’t that a big transformation? Friends, let us do some comparison of Lazarus situation for a better understanding.
1. The condition of Lazarus in the grave is the same as the condition of the unsaved
Poor Lazarus wasn't just sick any longer, he was dead and buried. Even when the Lord Jesus showed up at his grave, he was unaware of the presence of the Lord. In his condition, he is a picture of every person who does not know the Lord Jesus. Ephesians 2:1 says that the sinner is lost in trespasses and sins. In that lost condition, the sinner cannot sense the presence of the Lord. He cannot respond to the things of God. He cannot enjoy fellowship with God. He is dead and he is in a pitiful condition.
2. The call of Lazarus is the same as the call of the unsaved.
The Lord Jesus issued a very personal call at the tomb. He called specifically for Lazarus to come out. That call was for no one else that day, but for Lazarus alone. Friends, the Gospel call is a call to unsaved individuals from a holy God. When He comes calling for you, He will come to you as an individual. He won't ask your mom or dad. He won't speak to your husband or wife. (John 6:44, Rom. 10:13, Rev. 22:17)
3. The transformation of Lazarus is like the transformation of the saved
When the call of the Lord came to Lazarus, he headed and everything changed for him. Lazarus’s transformation brought liberty, and Luxury to him. He had spent 4 days in a tomb, totally oblivious to his condition. Now that he is alive, he is seen sitting at a table, fellowshipping with the Lord Jesus Christ. What a luxury! That is how it is for all who know the Lord and are saved. He fellowships with us here (Heb. 13:5; Matt. 28:20), and He promises us that we will fellowship with Him in His home on high (Rev 19:9).
