The trap of anxiety

The trap of anxiety

12 janv. 2020

Gildas DJISSA

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

Anxiety is a recurring trap on the inside. While we are considering this or that subject of daily life, anxiety is placed in ambush to divert our attention towards challenges, risks, uncertainties, etc. Very often we indulge in this insidious game about so many things: eating, drinking, clothing, housing, promotion at work, success of a business or a project, stability of a relationship, procreation after union, health of a loved one, balance in finances, personal reputation, etc.

The challenge is to disturb our inner peace, to tear ourselves away from any feeling of serenity and security, by raising in our minds the threat of imminent danger, very likely, unstoppable, etc. The challenge again is to torment ourselves within, to weaken our confidence in God and in ourselves. Worry is indeed an indicator of a half-mastered faith. This is proof that we are looking at the mountain, rather than at Jesus.

The tragedy is that by doing so, we are not solving any problems. Quite the contrary. Worry creates an unfavorable environment for the manifestation of the divine response to our needs. It places us in a position of disgrace rather than in a situation of approval from the Divine Provider. Because without faith, it’s impossible to be pleasing to God. (Hebrews: 11.6)

On closer inspection, we are generally worried about very little indeed, when we have such a GREAT GOD. It is HE who holds the power to subjugate everything.

A prayer for this week

Father, forgive me for all my moments of worry and grant me the grace to keep my eyes fixed on you constantly. Increase my faith in the name of Jesus. Amen
