“…but the Lord was not in the wind...but the Lord was not in the earth-shock. …but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, the sound of a soft breath.” I Kings 19:11-12
We live in a world where visibility matters, the sensational and the spectacular are kings. When a natural or legal person performs a so-called development act, it ensures that the national and international press are mobilized. Social aid and humanitarian action are no exception.
About everything and everyone, video-reports, illustrated interviews and other public communication products are so important. Personalities and institutions pay attention, as these media can fuel or undermine their credibility. Even in the household, all that is achieved can be found on the internet, in forums of wide diffusion, via the so-called social networks, etc. It is to be believed that the value of human action depends essentially on what the great number says.
As a child of God, is it really necessary to do so much? What are we looking for by spreading each of our daily actions? That the name of God be glorified or the merits of man are put forward?
The passage that is proposed to us this week brings to light the God who manifests himself in the calm of a soft and light whisper. This God who is not in the noise or the show. He does not need to impress anyone and visibility in the sense of men is nothing but vanity at his approach.
That's why we sometimes find it difficult to hear and see him act in our lives while he is there, present and at work. Yes, God is acting right now in your life and in mine without fanfare.
When we pray for an answer to a need, a direction in front of a situation and that the voice of the Father is not audible, it does not mean remoteness or abandonment on his part. Let's keep confidence. God is there, acting in and around us. Persevere in obedience. The hand of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too hard to hear. Isaiah: 59.1.
A prayer for this week
Father, thank you for the wisdom of your silence and the grace you make me to serve you better and better in the secret of humility and discretion. Amen
