Martial KOUNOU

“And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm” Luke 8:24
In the passage of Luke 8 from the verse 22, a storm was raging; the ship was filled with water and, for obvious reasons, the disciples were afraid for their lives. At a certain point, they even considered that the situation could degenerate and result in lethality: “Master, master, we perish”. Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep. The questions that come to mind here are: was he not aware of the storm? Could he not have felt how boisterous the sea was then? If he was, why did he not wake up promptly to address the issue?
The answers to the above questions are found in Psalm 23: 4: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me (…)”. In other words, the reason I will fear no evil even when I find myself in the midst of the greatest danger is that Christ is with me. The moment Emmanuel is with you, forget about any fear; you can fail alone but you and Jesus cannot fail_. If the disciples were the only ones in the boat, however skilled they might have been, they could still fear for their lives, but not when the Master was then inside the ship.
Brothers and sisters may the Lord help us have the same mentality as the one that was in Christ so we can remain calm even in the midst of any storm: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). People with such a mindset believe that no matter the problem they go through, God will ultimately make a way. Look at what Job said in Job 19:25-26: “for I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God” The three friends of David displayed that same mentality when they confessed in Daniel 3: 17 “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king”.
When faced with storms in your life, please forget about the issue and verify if Jesus is there.
