“Then he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have more food than they can eat, and here I am starving to death!” Luke 15:17 (ISV)
To come to one’s senses literally implies one was out of them. It is living with no attention to oneself, to one’s moral or spiritual values and standards. It is to suddenly realize one had been very foolish.
There are indeed moments of life when distractions, love of worldly trends, etc. draw us into situations the evil effect of which we realize with the benefit of hindsight. Coming to one’s sense in such circumstances sounds like a providential wakeup call. And that was the case of the prodigal son in our base verse.
When survival becomes your purpose and you feel like your creation is abused, you need to come to your senses. When there is no increase in your life for a long time despite your constant effort, it means that the enemy has made your life a project. That tells you it is high time you came to your senses. When you keep experiencing rejection outright and the enemy is on your case, that is an indicator for you to come to your senses. When you have tried every imaginable human solution to problems and there is no sign of improvement, this should speak to your conscience for you to pause, check what is going wrong. It is time to invite God in your race (Grace).
Indeed, coming to one’s senses is generally the first step of a journey that takes one through a non-complacent analysis of a situation to the ideal solution to it. Look at how that exercise worked for the prodigal son. It can work for you as well.
God loves us so much that when he wants to bring our minds back to Him, he would sometimes allow certain situations in our life with the secret desire that they would sensitize us on the need to look back to him. Some seize such opportunities immediately; others overlook them many times until it gets too late.
My brother or sister, maybe you are at that crossroads when you need to come to your senses. If that is the case, please don't delay this exercise any longer. Do take a few minutes and reflect deeply over your situation until you receive God's direction on the way forward. "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion" God Bless you!
