“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Revelations 3:15-16
A lot of Christians today are neither cold nor hot. The zeal with which we served God and work for him has died out because of the cares of this world.
Even though Jesus was addressing the church in Laodicea, who have waxed cold because they had become rich, the same applies to a lot of us today.
1. WHY THEN DO WE GO COLD?
a. The Love of this World: several scriptures in the Bible warned against the love of this world. In Mathew 6:24 Jesus said _“No one can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon”._ In James 4:4, James rebuked and said _“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God”_.
b. The Pride of Life: The Bible says pride goes before destruction. In verse 17 of Revelation 3, the Bible tells us of how pride overtook the Laodicea church because they were wealthy.
No wonder we walk like dead people whose spirits and souls are dead. We should not forget that the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. (1 John 2:16 NLT)
2. CONSEQUENCES
It is clear that the consequences of a believer living a lukewarm life is spiritual death.
In verse 15 of revelation 3, our Lord Jesus Christ said he will vomit us out. In the book of John, he also indicated that a branch that does not bear fruit will be cut off. In Mathew 5:13 He said that when we lose our saltiness, we will be trampled underfoot.
Therefore brethren, let us heed to the master’s call today. “As many as I loves, I rebuked and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” he calls
