Centre Saint-Camille de Bohicon

Centre Saint-Camille de Bohicon

Following the report on the donation to the Centre Vidjingni in Dékanmè, which highlighted the critical food shortage situation at the Centre Saint Camille in Bohicon, Weekly Bread readers reacted swiftly with voluntary subscriptions.

The Centre Saint Camille de Bohicon, located on the road to Cové, is a compound housing two hundred and twenty (220) men, women and children with mental health problems. According to Mr. Félix GBENOU, who manages the center (Tel. 94010360 /97606580), it was founded thirty years ago by a Beninese brother living in Côte d'Ivoire. He had opened centers in Bouaké and Korogo where mentally ill people were taken in, treated and fed.

Enthralled by the social work he had accomplished, some Beninese priests visiting Côte d'Ivoire asked him to consider the same initiative in his own country. This led to the creation of the Avrankou center, followed by the one in Bohicon. Plans are now underway to open other centers in the northern part of the country, notably in Kandi.

In addition to the 220 “boarders” at this center, twenty-six (26) others have already been cured and support the center from time to time.

For several months now, the State has been helping the Center by paying its water and electricity bills. As for the rest, the Centre Saint Camille in Bohicon, like most other similar centers (Centre Vidjingni in Dékanmè, for example), relies on divine providence. As a result, people of good will contribute, according to their sensibilities, donations in kind or in cash to enable the center's managers to meet the needs of its “boarders”.

With the balance from December 2009, the funds raised amounted to two hundred and twenty-two thousand (222,000) FCFA. This amount was used to purchase :

• four (04) 25 kg bags of rice

• two (02) 100 kg bags of corn

• three (03) 25-liter cans of vegetable oil

• two (02) cartons of soap

• two (02) cartons of Special Sugar

• four (04) cartons of noodle

The donation ceremony took place on Saturday, March 06, 2010. The delegation comprised Crépin ADEROMOU, Igor Ulrich AHOLOU and Martial KOUNOU.

A brief meeting with the head of the Center and his colleagues enabled us to set the context for our intervention.

Joyfully, they received the foodstuffs from our hands with much gratitude. The ceremony was brief and not at all solemn.
