What Will Make The Difference In Your Life !

“The LORD was with him ; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden” Genesis 39:21

When going through the Holy Scriptures, one’s attention inevitably is captured by some phrases among which “The Lord was with…” Of course according to the version of the Bible at hand, other phrases can well stand for the same. However, whatever the style, the circumstance in which this phrase is used is the same throughout the Bible. Only by focusing on stories wherein this phrase is used can one somehow realize its depth and its spiritual meaning as being the benevolent, sovereign and glorious, in a word unfathomable presence of God with or in the midst of his people.

One has indeed a more precise idea of the importance of God’s presence once one understands why Moses, the great patriarch, made the following request to God : “…if your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here….” Ex. 33:15 or again, once one sees how joyful David, God’s hero, was on hearing how Obed of Edom’s house prospered and sent God’s Arch, the epitome of His presence, from the house of Obed of Edom to the city of David. It therefore becomes easier to understand that that presence does make all the difference. That is also exemplified by the following abstracts :

  • About Joseph : “The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.” “The LORD was with him ; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden” “The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.” Genesis 39:2-5, 21, 23.
  • About Joshua : “And the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses.” Joshua 3:7 and “So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.” Joshua 6:27.
  • About Hezekiah : “And the LORD was with him ; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.” 2 King 18:7
  • About Jehoshaphat : “The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him. He did not consult the Baals.” “The Lord established the kingdom under his control ; and all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor” 2 Chr. 17 : 3, 5.

On the other hand, the tragic end of Samson’s story or that of the King Saul, when they disobeyed the Lord, shows how costly it is for a man or a people from whom God has withdrawn Himself or His presence. Were they given opportunity today to talk, they would be straightforward in placing a statement like this : “all the world’s gold, silver, cattle, the alien woman’s lovely eyes and sweet words are nothing compared to the presence of God”. They would enthusiastically, emphatically and hastily add this : “If the Lord is with you, as He was with Moses our father, his presence in your life will definitely make all the difference.”

A Confession for Today : “More of you, Lord, more of you, more of judgment of your voice, of your will. Lord, more of you in my life !”
