Our Commitments !

lundi 2 novembre 2015, par Josepha HITOEMETO OUIKOUN

“….they bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the LORD our Lord” Nehemiah 10:29

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you took some commitments before the Lord, just to realize a few days, months and years later that you rather drew far from Him ? You speak a bit to the Lord, read His word, but you end up discovering that your communion with Him is not as passionate as the one you expressed when you are committing yourself. No wonder, you also happened to promise God at the dawn of a New Year that year will be different. You then decided to change some habits to acquire new behaviors. However, such commitments appeared not to have lasted as you quickly forget them because you mainly relied on your own strength to keep them.

In Nehemiah 10, the People of God bound themselves with a curse and an oath to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the Lord. Therefore, more than a simple commitment, it was by way of an oath that the people vowed to observe His commands and for that, they were ready to undergo God’s curse if they fail in their promise.

What about us today ? What is the value of commitments we take before God, our friends, parents, children and spouses ? Are they things we commit to do under a short-term emotion or are they decisions we make to please a friend, a brother or an elder we desperately seek to impress ? If our commitments align with any of the up-cited criteria, we’d better call them joke rather than consider them as real commitments. For laughing sake we may give free rein to such jokes either with our fellows or with younger people. But anytime our commitments are related to God, let our attitude be totally different !

Like the people of God in Nehemiah’s time, let our commitments be sealed with seriousness for the decision to follow God is not a mere promise ! It is rather a serious and solemn resolution we need to renew everyday with the support of the Holy Ghost.

It is good that we examine ourselves every day, acknowledging the necessary changes and then designing plans accordingly to achieve them. For example, if you note that your private worships are no longer regular and deep, you need to appreciate the situation and take decision that is likely to strengthen that communication with God. This may consist of spending more time in prayer. Willing is key in this process as it an important ingredient that propels us into another realm.

However, let’s also be realistic to acknowledge our limits which are tightly linked with our human nature. This will push us to request God’s support which alone can empower us to keep our commitments in a sustainable way.

Let’s ask the Lord to work in us, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Put in another way, if the Lord is working in us, we shall be pleased to honor our commitments because the Lord will inject in us the necessary ‘’desire’’ and ‘‘action’’ to keep our promises.

Let’s then ask the Holy Spirit to help us keep focused every day !
